Sif Brookes (she/her)

Sif Brookes (She/Her) is a reconstructionist Norse/Nordic Heathen with a specialised focus on death deities in the Norse sphere. The Valkyries are and remain a pivotal element of her personal practice and path, alongside (among others) Hel, Freyja, Angrboda, Sif, Skadi, the Nornir and Disir. She is dedicated to a feminist perspective of the historical record and literature, and endeavours to illuminate the often ignored and sidelined elements of the Nordic corpus.

A founding host of the ‘Heathen Wyrdos Podcast’, she left the project in April 2023 to pursue her writing projects. Sif is the co-author and illustrator of ‘The Wyrd Less Woven, an Alternative Heathen Prayer Book’, and author of ‘Valkyrjur, Servant or Master?’. In June 2024, Sif was one of the Editors for the first volume of ‘Heathenry, the International Journal for Heathen Research’, in which she also submitted a paper entitled, ‘She Who Becomes Death. Discussing the Norn Skuld as a Death Deity’. It is available in open access on Academia.edu.

She is currently working on ‘The Wild Unleashed, Tackling the Other in Norse Myth’ alongside Dan Coultas, and ‘Sigrun, A Novella’. She is currently the host of the ‘Heathen Hangout Podcast’ and, as of October 2024, one of the hosts of ‘The Wyrd Thing’ podcast. She loves to normalise talking about Heathenry and Paganism, and strongly encourages Heathens and Pagans to create. Sif is also a digital and traditional artist and uses her art to express devotion.

Sif is the Marketing Officer, LGBTQIA+ Officer, and Committee member of Asatru UK, the National LGBTQIA+ Manager, Council Representative and member of the Board of Trustees for the Pagan Federation, and Social Media Co-Ordinator and member of the Board of Trustees for PaganAid.

Sif is an ardent proponent for removing the barriers around academic learning. In May 2023, she was one of a handful of Pagans to be invited to the Norse in the North Conference at Leeds University, opening an important channel of dialogue between higher education centres and Pagan practitioners. As part of the conference, she helped lead the first public ritual there, with a focus on recognising academic ancestors of blood and kin, as well as those who could not pursue such paths. Sif remains committed to opening communication lines between Pagan populations and centres of learning. In 2025, she hopes to pursue a master’s degree in early Medieval Studies to bolster her knowledge and skillset.
