As May Day approaches, and the days before & after, we call on all Heathens worldwide
who stand for inclusive, anti-fascist practice to light beacons in solidarity with all who stand
for these values. Whether you are lighting a candle in your home with your loved ones, or
are hosting a bonfire party open to the public, we ask you to help us shine a light on all the
good work, good practice, and good people in Heathenry across Midgard.
This practice has deep roots. In ancient and medieval times different groups and societies
across Europe had chains of bonfire beacons they would light as a warning of impending
attack and to rally people to the defense of their homes. This practice has extended into our
modern lives; on May 8th, 2015, communities across the UK lit bonfires to celebrate the 70th
anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany. Heathen Unites Against Racism organized people
around the world to light beacons in solidarity with inclusion and anti-fascism in 2016, 2017,
and 2019. The Way of Fire and Ice last held this event in 2022, which was a grand success.
This year, as a way to make this event even more accessible, Fellowship member Liagis has
designed a bindrune to represent beacon lighting. If you are unable to light a flame, sharing
this bindrune or using it in your personal practice is another powerful way to participate in
this celebration.
We call on you to participate and celebrate in the spirit of inclusivity and our fight against
fascism. Please take a picture of your beacon, whether it is a roaring bonfire or a candle,
and send it to contact@onblackwings, send it to our social media pages, or post it publically
in our Discord Server and Facebook Group. If you wish to post on your own social media,
please use the hashtag #FOFILightTheBeacons! If applicable, please also share the
location of your event, the approximate number of participants, and where (in terms of the
nearest major city or region) it took place. If you want to organize a public bonfire event,
please send us any information and we will promote it.
Together we will ignite a fire in our hearts and homes that will push back the shadows of fear & ignorance and shine light on what gives us hope!
